Each year the best current features, documentaries and shorts from all regions of Canada are presented in what has become one of the largest annual public exhibitions of new Canadian film in the world. Our programmers received more than 600 submissions this year and selected the top 100 films . The  Vancouver public responds very enthusiastically to Canadian films , making this one of our best-attended series. The line-up includes 57 films in the Canadian Short Images program. Canadian Images, along with our Film & Television Forum, help make the VIFF the most important event in the region for industry development and exhibition.

CITYTV WESTERN CANADA FEATURE FILM AWARD

The seventh annual $12,000 Citytv Western Canada Feature Film Award is selected by a three-person jury and presented to the director of the best feature film from Western Canada. The award is announced prior to the Closing Gala film on October 10. Last year's winner was Carl Bessai for Normal. The feature films in this year's competition are:

 
Each year, the audience determines the Most Popular Canadian Film Award.
 

NFB MOST POPULAR CANADIAN DOCUMENTARY AWARD

The National Film Board of Canada presents $2,500 in technical services from its Filmmaker Assistance Program to the winner of the NFB Most Popular Canadian Documentary Award. Last year's winner was Yung Chang for Up the Yangtze. The 2008 winner will be chosen by audience ballot.

 

MOST PROMISING DIRECTOR OF A CANADIAN SHORT FILM AWARD

The Most Promising Director of a Canadian Short Film will receive a $2,000 cash award from an anonymous donor, and Avid Media Composer software valued at $2,500. This award also is  a djudicated by the Canadian Images jury. The 2007 winner was Anna McRoberts for The Windfisherman .

CANADIAN SHORT IMAGES

Programmers have selected 57 films for the Canadian Short Images program. Some shorts play prior to features and mid-length films, but most appear within five themed programs: A Dérive, Hunter/Gatherer, Maps, Person, Place or Thing, and  The Obstacles Were Everywhere. Special thanks to Canwest for sponsoring Canadian Short Images.
