In the not-too-distant future, two ambitious young women, Nell (Ellen Page) and Eva (Evan Rachel Wood), live with their father in a modest home up in the mountains on the West Coast. Suddenly, the power goes out. No one knows why. Soon, there’s no gasoline and the solar-power system is not working. Over the following days, the radio shares talk of terrorism, technical breakdown, disease and uncontrolled violence. Then, one day, the radio stops broadcasting. Absolute silence. Step by ominous step, everything that Nell, an aspiring academic and Eva, a promising contemporary dancer, have come to rely on is stripped away: parental protection, information, food, safety, friends… All gone. Faced with a world where rumour is the only guide, trust is scarce and the loneliness is excruciating, the sisters fall deeper into a primitive life that tests their endurance and their bond.
Patricia Rozema (I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing, White Room) directs a superb cast including Page, Wood, Max Minghella, Callum Keith Rennie and Michael Eklund in this speculative fiction about survival. Rozema wrote the screenplay based on the popular novel by Jean Heglund.
"It’s an inspiring story, acted with heart and grit by Paige and Wood, and film directed with adroitness by Rozema… As cinema, Into the Forest provides plenty of drama and suspense…"—David D’Arcy, Screen
