Who amongst us hasn’t clucked a tongue at the sight of plastic bottles washing up on our pristine beaches? Well, this eye-opening documentary alerts us to the fact that that’s just the tip of the plastic pollution iceberg. Boarding a tall ship with a tight-knit team of scientists and sailors, filmmaker Scott Elliot voyages from Bermuda to the North Atlantic Gyre to investigate very rigorously the damage being done to our oceans. Forgoing the sensationalist images favoured by newscasts—immense floating garbage patches—the film seeks out smaller scale evidence of this eco-crisis—a fish with 30 plastic fragments in its digestive tract. Despite such startling moments, Elliot offers encouragement, courtesy of reasonable solutions and the suggestion that, by banding together like a seafaring crew, we might yet turn the tide.
