Program: Birders: The Central Park Effect
As hospitable landings become harder to find, birds have grown increasingly reliant on urban oases like Central Park. Incredibly, almost a quarter of North America’s avian species now flock to the centre of Manhattan, luring hordes of amateur ornithologists along with them. As one such "birder" enthuses, "It turns every morning into a treasure hunt!" Another speaks eloquently of "the unicorn effect," whereby certain species take on an almost mythological status. And thanks to the dazzling cinematography in Jeffrey Kimballs’s documentary, even the untrained eyed can appreciate just how majestic these beguiling creatures are. When paired with the effusive musings of their colourful admirers—including author Jonathan Franzen—these spectacular images allow us to understand how spying a warbler on a fateful morning just might prove to be a life-changing experience. "There is sudden beauty throughout Birders, as the camera catches gorgeous, high-definition shots of a multitude of plumed, temporary citizens of the park.”—Ryan McGee, AV Club Followed by: Facing Animals
