Leifur (Olafur Darri Ólafsson) wakes up hung over, buck naked, smelling of sex and slathered in makeup. All told, it’s just another day at the office for Iceland’s most notorious politician. With his latest public meltdown racking up YouTube hits, the hedonistic miscreant is destined for rehab. (His superiors don’t buy his argument that, “It wasn’t a fight. It was art.”) Intent on bowing out disgracefully, Leifur stages one last blowout while trying desperately to stave off memories of his past transgressions.
Waddling about like an obese, inebriated, sexually aroused toddler, Leifur serves as a poster boy for “a nation of drinkers” long plagued by political corruption. With elliptical editing and whirling cinematography emulating Leifur’s chronologically jumbled, kaleidoscopic reality, Marteinn Thórsson plunges us into a lurid, bacchanalian fever dream. And yet, there’s a sobering sense of outrage in his diabolical depiction of a fat cat still clinging to the ledge after sending his country hurtling into the financial abyss.
“XL very effectively simulates the disorientation of a permanently intoxicated mind. [Ólafsson] plays the rampaging Leifur with magnetic brio—a reprehensible and thoroughly pitiable character, stuck emptily chasing extremes.”—Giovanni Marchini Camia, Film Comment.
"An ugly film, a dirty film, a film that you almost need to take a shower after wallowing in all the filth within… But it’s above all a good film. Seek it out…"—Swarez, Twitch
