Jia returns to his own roots (disco dancing to the Pet Shop Boys!) in his masterly vision of China’s past, present and future. We start in 1999, with Shanxi belle Tao torn between two rival boyfriends. She opts for the more ambitious of the two, gets married and has a son… only to end up divorced and alone in 2014. Ten years later, in 2025, her son is a dislocated émigré in Australia. The heart of the film is a question: what lasts and what’s all too easily lost? Tony Rayns

Dragons & Tigers Award-winner Jang Kunjae returns with a made-in-Japan movie which is the indie hit of the year in Korea. It’s a film of two halves (one in colour, one in monochrome) about a Korean director and his woman translator visiting the town of Gojo to see if it’s worth making a movie there. Their encounters with locals spark the ‘fantasia’ of the second half, in which everything and everyone is transformed. Intensely felt and very touching. Tony Rayns

Shot in Miyoshi and nearby Hiroshima, Fujikawa’s exquisitely crafted debut feature is a kind of coming-of-age story. It centres on junior-high-schooler Yuta’s summer: when not searching for fossils of ancient whales and shellfish, he has to cope with a friend moving away, his mother taking a new partner and his grandfather dying. The non-pro cast is great, and so is the integration of documentary elements, but the real star is Fujikawa himself, a master in the making. Tony Rayns

The fraught and very possibly doomed romance between a dumpy 32-year-old woman and a failing boxer gives 100 Yen Love its storyline, but the film’s focus is on its unlikely heroine, a chronic underachiever who finally discovers something worth getting out of bed for. Take’s command of image and mood couldn’t be better; Ando Sakura is stupendous in the lead. Tony Rayns

Hashiguchi has likely given more pleasure to VIFF audiences over the years than any other Japanese director, and this is his crowning achievement to date: three interwoven tales of individuals learning to cope when love slips through their fingers. The protagonists are a bereaved bridge-repairman, an unhappy housewife with creative ambitions and an elite gay lawyer. Wildly funny in parts, but the overall tone is worldly and very wise. While he was presenting his Horses of Fukushima here last year, Matsubayashi shot some images of Vancouver—and he’s fed them into this extraordinary wordless documentary. Shot in 17 cities across the globe, this uses only reflected images—seen in glass, mirrors, puddles and so on—to sketch a critique of a world gone wrong. It’s poetic, affectionate and cynical in equal measure. Playing with an ace selection of animé shorts. Tony Rayns

The tone is broadly comic, but Tominaga’s edgy thriller flirts with some serious themes: voyeurism, showbiz chicanery, violent crime. A scummy ex-teacher disgraced ten years ago for secret filming in the girls’ locker room runs into one of his ex-pupils, now a wet-towel deliveryman. Next thing they’re sexual rivals and caught up in a blackmail scam. Indecently entertaining. Tony Rayns

The sixth of Soda’s excellent “Observational” documentaries shows us everything there is to know about catching, shucking and selling oysters, but its interest goes beyond molluscs. Despite a recent influx of fishermen from Fukushima (refugees from the tsunami), the small oyster factories on the coast north of Okayama are in decline—largely because the next generation doesn’t want to run them. The solution: import labour from China. Soda’s focus gradually shifts from oysters to Sino-Japanese relations. Tony Rayns
