In the 1930s, Swiss photographer Gotthard Schuh (1897-1969) pioneered the kind of sensuous and atmospheric poetic realism that went on to influence a generation of post-WWII photographers, including his friend Robert Frank. Documentarian Villi Hermann retraces Schuh’s footsteps to Indonesia, pictures in hand, and revisits the places and people Schuh photographed, to fascinating effect.
