Named one of the 50 most influential indie filmmakers/players around the world by Variety, Nansun Shi is one of Asia’s most accomplished and respected producers working in the Asian film scene today.
Born in Hong Kong, Nansun received her Bachelor’s Degree from the Polytechnic of North London. Her film career began when she joined Cinema City Company Ltd in 1981 as Controller with overall responsibility for production, distribution and administration.
In 1984, Nansun and her husband Tsui Hark founded an independent production company, Film Workshop, which has produced numerous internationally-acclaimed box office successes. Its latest production, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame was both a critical and commercial success. The film grossed RMB300m in China alone and was in competition at the 67th Venice International Film Festival in 2010.
In 2006, Nansun joined the board of the Bona International Film Group, then a privately-held independent distributor with 15% market share in China. The Company has since listed on NASDAQ in December 2010.
Today, apart from being the Executive Director of Film Workshop and a Board member of Bona Film Group, Nansun is also the Chairman of Distribution Workshop, an international sales agent for Asian films which is based in Hong Kong. She is also a member of the Hong Kong Film Development Council.
Nansun served on the jury of the 57th Berlin International Film Festival in 2007 and the 54th Sydney International Film Festival in 2008. She was also a Jury member at the 64th Cannes International Film Festival in 2011 and the President of the Jury at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, 2011.
