Reception from 7pm with live music, food, and swag bag
Film at 8.30pm
Directed by the “Sultan” of Turkish cinema Türkân Şoray, and written for the screen by Turkey’s enfant terrible, writer-director Onur Ünlü, Not So Far Away tells the story of the forceful relocation of an infamous big city tavern to hostile territory – a conservative, unwelcoming town by the name of Uzaklar (Far Away). As the vivacious "ladies of the night" who habituate this establishment settle in and set up shop, their antics are met with scorn and their business is boycotted by the determined townsfolk. Inspired by true events, we bear witness to a charming tale filled with tears and laughter; all unraveling through the non-judgmental eyes of a child, Yusuf.
Türkân Şoray is melodrama. The most prolific actress of Yeşilçam, Turkey’s golden era of cinema, she returns to the director’s chair after more than three decades. In Not So Far Away she craftily exalts the genre to new heights by transforming the quintissential into the contemporary. Those who have a penchant for old Turkish melodramas will find this hits home, as for the others – there’s something in it for everyone to enjoy.
DIRECTOR’S BIO | Türkân Şoray, the ’Sultan of Turkish Cinema,’ is the most recognizable star of Yeşilçam, or Turkish Hollywood, for the lack of a better phrase. Having appeared in over 150 feature films over a career spanning 5 decades, she is singlehandedly responsible for constituting much of the Turkish cinematic lexicon.
A prolific actress who has portrayed characters from all walks of life, Şoray’s on-screen aura is unparalleled to this very day. Outside of her fruitful acting carrer, and unbeknownst to many, Şoray has directed four films which have all garnered popular acclaim. Her latest passion project Not so Far Away is Şoray’s fifth directorial effort following Yılanı Öldürseler, which she directed in 1981.
