Matteo Rulli is 24 years old. He hits, he barely speaks and he is sometimes prone to violent outbursts against the people who love him the most. When screenwriter Stefano Rulli (The Best of Youth) and his wife Clara filmed the opening of City of the Sun, their holiday camp for developmentally disabled people, they had no plans to tell their own story. But what began as simple documentation evolved into something much more profound. Using a variety of different shots, sometimes simply laying the camera down on the table, Rulli constructs an intimate look into the very private and seldom seen world of an autistic child and his parents. Family history is shown through old home movies and still photos, but it the song composed for Matteo's birth, and sung by his mother, that sums up the extremes of love and frustration that autism creates. Small moments, conversations and family gatherings add up to create a portrait of humanity, as startling, as it is compelling. This is an extremely brave film not all of the interactions between Matteo and his parents are easy to watch but ultimately it is an eloquent testimony to the power of parental love in the most challenging of circumstances.
