Eve (Phoebe Jojo Kut), a precocious nine-year-old with an overactive imagination, was born in the year of the Fire Horse, notorious among Chinese families for producing the most troublesome children. When a series of misfortunes strike her family, Eve and her older sister Karena (Hollie Lo) turn to Catholicism in an attempt to gain control over their destiny. With the help of Sunday-school classes and a book entitled Living Together in Heaven on Earth, Karena sets a demanding path toward salvation. Their mother May Lin (Vivian Wu, The Joy Luck Club), preoccupied by her own search for peace in light of recent tragedy, leaves the girls to navigate the tricky waters of faith alone; not particularly devout in her own religious practices, May Lin pragmatically places a crucifix next to Buddha on the mantle in the hope that two faiths will offer more protection than one. Seen through the eyes of Eve, the girls' spiritual journey is a wondrous one, in which Jesus dances with the Buddha and the goddesses in the moonlight and a grandmother's spirit can be reincarnated in an opera-singing goldfish.

A warm colour palette drawn from the 1970s infuses this period film with youthful innocence as the girls encounter the multicultural realities of their diverse neighbourhood. Cinematographer Nicolas Bolduc's keen sense of style combines with Kwan's ability to capture wry moments of social commentary to create a compelling atmosphere of lyrical realism. Marked by a strong visual sensibility, Julia Kwan's debut feature provides a magical look at the perplexities of family life and the challenges of childhood.
