 Film Resources
The VIFF has shown almost all of Lee Myung-Se’s films over the years, and his police thriller Nowhere to Hide premiered here in 1999. Much water has flowed under the bridge since then. Nowhere to Hide went on to achieve a spectacular international success (it was the first Korean film to be distributed in many countries), but Lee launched an attack on Korean film industry management and decamped to New York for several years. Now he’s back with his first swordplay romance, and no Korean movie of the moment is more anticipated. We haven’t yet seen it finished, but this is one we’re more than happy to take on trust.

The story, based on a Korean manga by Bang Hak-Ki: we’re in Joseon Dynasty Korea, and there’s corruption in high places. Detective Ahn (Ahn Sung-Ki) and his woman colleague Nam-Soon (Ha Ji-Won) are investigating a counterfeiter. Nam-Soon’s trail leads her to a man in a goblin mask (Kang Dong-Won), which fails to conceal his hauntingly sad eyes. Their first duel, under the moonlight, seems more like a dance of seduction than a mortal combat. When the ministerial responsibility for the counterfeiting is exposed, Nam-Soon and Sad-Eyes have to duel again, the time really as enemies...
