It would be fair to call April Snow "the most-awaited Korean film of the year" simply because it’s the first film in two years to star Bae Yong-Jun, known to most of his fans as "Yon-sama." Bae shot to superstardom with his role in the Korean TV serial Winter Rhapsody, which has already played four times on Japanese television, and the VIFF experienced an unprecedented phenomenon this year when his fans petitioned the festival office for the film’s inclusion in the program. The film is still in post-production at the time of writing, so we haven’t seen it yet. But we’re very happy to invite it, partly to meet the wishes of the fans and partly because the VIFF gave two of director Hur Jin-Ho’s earlier films their international premieres. Hur first came to VIFF back in 1993 with his graduation short For Go-Chul, and then returned with his debut feature Christmas in August, a nominee for the Dragons & Tigers Award in 1998. We also screened his short Alone Together last year. The storyline: In-Su (Bae) is called to a hospital in Samcheok to attend his wife, seriously injured in a road accident. In the hospital he meets Seo-Young (Son Ye-Jin), whose husband was injured in the same accident. As the two accident victims fight for life, their spouses discover that they were having an affair. In-Su and Seo-Young check into a nearby motel to be close to the hospital. They gradually realize that their shared anger and emotional pain is drawing them together, and they edge into having an affair themselves...
