VIFF 2018 Highlights
Paris Barclay is one of television’s most successful and honored directors who has directed over 155 episodes of television including NYPD Blue, Glee, The West Wing, The Good Wife, Sons of Anarchy, Scandal, Empire, Pitch and Station 19. He is a two-time Emmy award-winner and has received an additional 6 Emmy nominations. Paris was elected President of the DGA in June 2013 where he served two terms before stepping down in June of 2017.
Tribute Award - Jean Marc Vallée
VIFF was thrilled to celebrate the storytelling accomplishments of Jean-Marc Vallée, an Oscar nominee and one of our country’s finest directors. This special event from 2018 will saw Jean-Marc receive a VIFF Tribute Award. The evening commenced with an encore screening of the series premiere of Sharp Objects followed by an ‘in conversation’ event, presented by the Directors Guild of Canada and hosted by Tim Southam.
In Conversation with...Jane Goodall
Using rediscovered archival footage of a 1960 expedition by primatologist Jane Goodall, Brett Morgen assembled an essential portrait of one of the most influential figures of our time. This special VIFF 2018 screening was be followed by a 45-minute Q&A with Dr. Goodall, who offered further insights into her work and our relationship with nature. The event raised funds for the Jane Goodall Institute, which promotes understanding and protection of chimpanzees, other great apes and their habitats.
During VIFF 2018 we were treated to an informative session with multiple award-winning Canadian writer/director, Patricia Rozema as she took us behind the scenes of her feature Mouthpiece. Patricia distinguished herself as a writer/director with I've Heard the Mermaids Singing (winner: Prix de la Jeunesse) and other acclaimed credits include When Night Is Falling, Mansfield Park, Grey Gardens and Into the Forest. Her TV credits include Anne with an E and Mozart in the Jungle.
