After Love

L’ Economie du couple

Panorama | Spotlight on France

Joaquim Lafosse (Our Children) turns his gimlet eye on the final stages of a marital breakdown in this terrifically scripted and acted drama. Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) and noted director Cédric Kahn play the wounded couple, together for 15 years and parents to twin daughters, who circle each other warily and snipe at each other constantly in their spacious and well-appointed apartment. She is the breadwinner, and he is an unemployed architect; she wants him gone, but he refuses to go. And it is the apartment that is the sticking point. Though they bought the apartment with money she inherited, he figures he’s entitled to half because he completely renovated it… The French title translates to “The Economy of a Couple”, and what Lafosse has made is a kind of real estate drama that illustrates the fact that, after the love is gone, the money becomes the issue…

“It’s like Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage condensed into a shorter timeframe and only a handful of rooms, although its depiction of a crumbling relationship can be just as complex… [The film] accomplishes what it set out to do, with both Kahn and Bejo aptly shouldering all the narrative weight until the final scene—a scene which, in true form, involves even more legalese about property disputes. In that sense, Lafosse has remained loyal to his roots as a sort of cinematic magistrate, and After Love ultimately makes a strong case for—or rather against—what happens when the person you no longer love is still stuck on the lease.”—Jordan Mintzer, Hollywood Reporter
