Love and Bullets

Ammore e malavita

Panorama | Focus on Italy

A dazzling cinematic confection, this irreverent musical-slash-crime-slash-action comedy captured five David di Donatello awards—Italy’s equivalent to the Oscars—including best film, best actress in a supporting role, best score, best original song and best costumes. The story hinges on two star-crossed lovers: Fatima (the amazing Serena Rossi—wait until you hear her belt out the Irene Cara Flashdance classic "What a Feeling"), a good-hearted nurse who saw something she shouldn’t have and has consequently been marked for death, and Ciro (Giampaolo Morelli), the mobster tasked with taking her out who, we all know, is destined to fall for her. Fuelled by operatic emotion, ornamented with stylistic flourishes and replete with beautifully staged song-and-dance routines, Marco and Antonio Manetti’s "Mafia musical" (their term) also features boisterous melodies so catchy that even the dearly departed can’t keep themselves from joining in…

"There’s a bit of 007, a touch of Back to the Future and a hint of Bruce Lee in Love and Bullets but there’s above all a new, colourful, intelligent and amused tribute by the Manetti Bros. to Naples, to its culture and also to its guapperia [the Neapolitan equivalent of ‘thug culture’]. And thanks to the lyrics of Nelson Garofalo and the music of Pivio and Aldo De Scalzi (with choreography by Luca Tommassini) there is also what you need most in a musical: beautiful songs."— Benedetta Bragadini, Rolling Stone (Italy)
