The President of Mexico is nearing the end of his term when his frivolous future planning is interrupted by an international conflict. Mamartuile, a kind of homage to early 1960s political satires, is full of deadpan humour that offers a delightful, drool commentary on the state of politics. The production design nails all the period details and the two lead performances are terrific, especially José María Yazpik as the assistant Cavazos. In this land where the president is a well-off clown who just wants to cut ribbons and eat cake, what could go wrong?
