Acclaimed poet and activist Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner explores the nuclear-testing legacy of her country and one particular island that houses a dark secret. The Republic of the Marshall Islands was once the testing site for some of the biggest nuclear weapons ever made by the US—remember Bikini Atoll? Jetnil-Kijiner travels to Runit Island, where the US entombed materials from it’s nuclear testing, to perform a poem searching for answers, justice and renewal for the people of Enewetak whose island was ruined. The film is a eulogy for the past and a future that never was, giving voice to those silenced for so long through the stories of people who are still living with the effects of radioactive fallout and displacement. A searing indictment of the hubris, arrogance and insensitivity of power and its waste—in this case actual nuclear waste.
