The Hymns of Muscovy
ALT | Modes
The act of flipping Moscow on its head allows for an unanchored glimpse of Russia’s past—and imagined future. With an original score based on the Soviet national anthem, composer Alexander Manotskov’s new Hymnic Variations glide us through this pristine, barren, inverted world, as correlated electronic chords help define and redefine Moscow’s 20th and 21st century buildings. Creator Dimitri Venkov’s juxtaposition of dark ethereal sound and rich impossible images capture the aesthetic of a world driven by the evolution of ideology. "As if in a twist of Goethe’s phrase, architecture plays its frozen music. Look closely, can you hear it?" asks Venkov.
