During a carefree day at the swimming pool, a boy’s fantasy about a girl he’s infatuated with suddenly becomes a lucid nightmare. Aquarium takes what is becoming an all too oft-occurring story in the world these days—a lone gunman goes on a killing spree—and frames it through the eyes of an adolescent in the early stages of sexual awakening. This disturbing film traverses four distinct sections in under 15 minutes so effortlessly and with such style, marvellous cinematography and editing that it distracts somewhat from the mindless violence that appears so suddenly. The tension never lets up in a final standoff, by which time it does seem the gunman has become aware of the enormity of his actions. Wow, what a trip!
