The Racer

ALT | International Shorts

Jodie lives and breathes motorcycling, but in a male-dominated sport the fight for recognition and sponsors is a hard road— if it weren’t for her dad’s unwavering support. Part of the 2018 series "Bridging the Gap: Love" from the Scottish Documentary Institute and Creative Scotland, the film focuses on Jodie’s passion for racing and the love of her father, who funds the operation and maintains her bikes—love, here, is clear and powerfully expressed. But the film is also about a young woman who could be seen as a role model, pursuing her dream on her own terms, unwilling to change her look or who she is in order to secure sponsorship. Onboard and aerial cameras put us right in the race action, and you get a good sense of how much time and effort it takes to run a small team in this sport. What shines through is the honesty: these are real people who can enjoy a meal together as much as they enjoy Jodie winning a race.
