Shot over ten years and in almost as many countries, Mariano Llinás’ wildly entertaining 14-hour epic is more than just the filmic event of the year; it’s a landmark work in South American film history. La Flor pays tribute to the history of narrative cinema via six episodes inspired by the different forms of cinematic art, bound together by the sensational, varied performances of four of Argentina’s greatest actresses: Elisa Carricajo, Pilar Gamboa, Valeria Correa, and Laura Paredes.
Each of the six episodes of La Flor takes off from a genre. The first episode could be regarded as a B-movie, the kind that Americans used to shoot with their eyes closed and now just can’t shoot anymore. The second episode is a sort of musical with a touch of mystery. The third episode is a spy movie. The fourth, arboreal episode is difficult to describe, but is hilarious and partly unfolds in the Dominion of Canada. The fifth one is inspired by an old French film (by Jean Renoir, no less). The last one is about a captive woman in the 19th century who return from the desert, from the Indians, after many years. And then there are 40 minutes of credits. La Flor is a constantly surprising work of incredible invention: miss it at your own peril.
