Santiago, Italia

Panorama | Focus on Italy

What would motivate celebrated leftist Italian director Nanni Moretti to now make a stirring, incisive documentary about a terrible civil war in a faraway country way back in the 1970s? The obvious answer: parallels to our own time and lessons to be learned in a new fight against the rise of the right and unmerciful nationalism. During the 1973 Chilean coup against the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende (see Spider, also playing VIFF 19), the Italian Embassy in Santiago played a major role in aiding those who opposed the Pinochet regime by finding them refuge in Italy.

This focus allows Moretti to add new layers of understanding to these incredible events. The broader story has been told before in great works of cinema by directors like Patricio Guzman and Miguel Littin (who both make appearances here). But Moretti has an urgent message to the present day, and he has assembled a very articulate group of first-hand participants to get the point across - and he hasn’t limited the invitation list to the "good guys"!
