Devil's Pie - D'Angelo
MAD | Music/Art/Design
D’Angelo is many things to many people: Top 40 R&B star, sex symbol, leader of the neo-soul movement, man of mystery and scandal… In this documentary portrait, director Carine Bijlsma goes beyond the commercial branding and lurid headlines to reach the man himself. Featuring intimate interviews and live footage from the 2015 Second Coming tour, the film succeeds as a tribute, an inquiry, and a splendid music documentary.
After making a splash with Brown Sugar in 1995 and then achieving superstardom with the wildly successful Voodoo in 2000, D’Angelo had a 14-year absence from the industry. In Devil’s Pie, he’s bravely candid about the personal problems that led to the hiatus, and further insight comes from friends like Dave Chapelle and The Roots’ Questlove. This is a lively, poignant movie about the costs of celebrity, the joys of art, and one brave man’s attempt to balance it all.
"An intimate portrait of a remarkable musician…. Bursting with immense energy and boasting an amazing soundtrack." - Chris Frieswijk, Cineuropa
