Morose widower Juha (Pekka Strang, star of Tom of Finland, VIFF 17, and excellent here), still wracked by remorse and grief ten years after failing to prevent his beloved wife’s drowning, seeks to restart his stalled life by entering into a relationship with dominatrix Mona (Krista Kosonen, Blade Runner 2049) in J-P Valkeapää’s eye-opening BDSM black comedy.
Left to raise their now-teen daughter on his own, Juha has spent a decade suppressing his own needs and desires. One day, after accidentally wandering into a BDSM club and being mistaken for a customer, he finds himself on the receiving end of a bout of erotic asphyxiation - and, mid-strangulation, has a vision of his wife. Soon, Juha - with Mona as a happy enabler - is in constant pursuit of self-abnegation, all the better to commune with his dead spouse…
Sex-positive and darkly funny, Valkeapää’s open-minded film grants both Mona and Juha a healthy dose of humanity as the odd couple who find a unique way to deal with grief and perhaps start anew…
"This inky comedy… is bracing for the empathetic psychological complexity it brings to oft-mistreated subject matter." - Guy Lodge, Variety
