Water Over Glass
Sea to Sky | BC Spotlight
This exquisite corpse collaboration playfully upends the traditional filmmaker-composer relationship by inviting four filmmakers - Kellen Jackson, Zoe Kirk-Gushowaty, Jimi Pantalon, and Amanda Thomson - to visually realize a sonic narrative recorded by The Cyrillic Typewriter, the current project of Jason Zumpano, a mainstay of Vancouver’s music scene. Zumpano has long maintained that the Typewriter’s recordings are envisioned as scores for film’s that exist solely in his mind. Fittingly, the narratives for these make-believe films are rich in ambiguity. As the musician told The Georgia Straight, "I love those movies when you don’t know what’s up." While this collaboration sees the music’s cinematic accompaniment take more concrete form, the end result remains wonderfully open to interpretation. Shifting between film stocks, digital video, and animation, Water Over Glass is a surreal fantasia that invites you to turn off your mind, relax, and float from sea to sky.
