Song Sparrow

ALT | International Shorts

A group of refugees in search of a better life pay a smuggler to take them across the border in the back of a refrigerated meat truck to a safe country… Song Sparrow uses puppet animation to tell this tense tale based on an actual event that happened in Austria in 2015. The characters are so well done - the people represent different ages, races, colours, and cultural backgrounds, all of them willing to put their lives on the line in search of a dream, while in reality having little choice. Optimism at the journey’s start leads to despair in their struggle to survive. What’s surprising is how much you identify with their crisis because of the animation style. This is a wonderfully different rendition of a now-familiar story that highlights the dangers so many refugees must undertake to escape hell for a chance at a new future.
