On her first shift at a crisis help centre, an untrained student answers a call from a suicidal repeat caller. Call Connect is all about the script and the execution: the camera is focused on her focusing on his voice, and both actors are terrific. Shot in a single take, which starts as a medium establishing shot of her at her desk before slowly zooming into a close-up of her face as the call goes on, the film has a surprisingly powerful emotional thrust. There are even some very funny bits as the caller plays around with this rookie before he gets serious. Similar to Operator (VIFF 2015) in concept and viewpoint, the film delivers an equally intense experience that shows us a small slice of what people on that side of the call must deal with, and gives us a renewed appreciation of their efforts, dedication, patience, and resourcefulness.
