After one of them becomes a mother, longtime but now-distant friends Sam and Nic attempt to reconnect during a long night full of wine, secrets, and lies. flush is a terrific two-hander about changing lives and changing dreams for young adults moving past the visions of youth and having encountered some disillusionment. What starts out kind of stiff turns into a therapeutic drunk for mom Sam, and lord knows we all need one of those on occasion. Set almost entirely in one room, the film has a theatrical setup and quality finely directed by VIFF alumnus Sheridan O’Donnell (A Picnic Table at Dusk, VIFF 18) and shot by Vancouver’s Todd Duym (Dawn, VIFF 18). Ultimately it’s the strong performances that make it all work, especially Lauren Chavez-Myers who absolutely shines as the far-too-long-restricted Sam in need of some release.
