Children of the Sea

Loner schoolgirl Ruka feels an affinity for the sea that grows ever stronger after she befriends Umi and Sora at the aquarium where her father works. More comfortable in water than on land, the two boys were raised by dugongs (mamatee-like creatures), that possess special powers connected to enigmatic events emerging around the world. As incidents involving sea creatures multiply, Ruka believes the ocean holds answers to the mysteries. An aquatic odyssey of mythical proportions ensues.
Based on Igarashi Daisuke’s beloved manga, Watanabe Ayumu’s boldly experimental and environmental animation offers no easy answers for its myriad mysteries and dense symbolism. Music by Miyazaki’s go-to composer Hisaishi Joe and character design by former Ghibli animator Konishi Kenichi help the film concoct a meticulously detailed and haunting world of natural wonder and adolescent discovery that simply overwhelms the senses. Produced by Studio 4°C, (Mind Game, Tekkon Kinkreet), the animation is mind-blowing even as the story becomes more profoundly mystical in the second half. You may not understand everything that you see, but you won’t be able to look away.
