Mickey is a twenty-something Taiwanese woman: sporting short hair, a baseball cap, and impressive tattoos, she’s both tough and depressed. Her mother lives in a kind of alcoholic haze; her dad left them long ago and owns a factory in Guangzhou, China. Mickey practices martial arts rituals at a local temple, an activity reserved for men.
Her best friend, Gin Gin, is an ultra-femme bleached blonde go-go dancer. Gin discovers she’s pregnant while her boyfriend is ghosting her. Since he’s also in Guangzhou, Micky and Gin Gin decide to head out on the road together. After their luggage is stolen, they’re taken in by a stranger and introduced to a glitzy, bizarrely otherworldly urban metropolis, and their road trip takes several strange and frightening turns.
First time director Lu Mian-mian’s vibrant new indie pulsates with local Taiwanese flavour. It puts two woman centre stage in a complicated relationship that celebrates their power, courage, independence, and creativity.
