Violation Image

Having already rattled VIFF audiences with their short films, Madeleine Sims-Fewer and Dusty Mancinelli now deliver a devastating, unshakeable debut feature in which a bucolic summer home is the stage for a Grand Guignol of transgression and retribution.

During an already strained reunion with her sister (Anna Maguire), Miriam (Sims-Fewer, unsettlingly inscrutable) is sexually assaulted by her brother-in-law (Jesse LaVercombe). As her world spins off its axis and the film’s timeline is slashed to ribbons and reconfigured, Miriam looks to claim her pound of flesh. And while there will be blood, there’ll be little in the way of catharsis.

The most visceral film in this year’s lineup will leave no one unscathed. And while that's partially attributed to the extreme violence depicted, the lingering power is even more indebted to Sims-Fewer and Mancinelli’s capacity to deftly harness Adam Crosby's woozy cinematography and Andrea Boccadoro’s discordant score to emulate the experience of a psychotic break. Rather than being left to sympathize with Miriam, you’re dragged into the morally murky depths of her anguished soul.

Director

Madeleine Sims-Fewer and Dusty Mancinelli met at the 2015 TIFF Talent Lab and quickly joined forces as a filmmaking duo. Highly focused on a naturalistic performance style and visual aesthetic, their films explore gender politics, the selfishness of human nature, and abuse of power.
