tick, tick… Boom!

VIFF Centre Screening

The musical Rent by Jonathan Larson was a game-changer in the history of Broadway, but the composer passed away the day of its first off-Broadway performance and never had the chance to enjoy his triumph. Prior to Rent, Larson’s first musical, the long-gestating Superbia, was never produced professionally. His second attempt, tick, tick… Boom! was an autobiographical account of that early failure - and this is what Hamilton composer Lin-Manuel Miranda brings to the screen in his own directorial debut. This makes for an unusual musical perhaps, but then you wouldn’t expect business as usual from these extraordinarily original creators. Andrew Garfield shines as Larson, waiter by day, composer by night. Vanessa Hudgens is his significant other, but sick of playing second fiddle to his musical ambition, and Bradley Whitford is his mentor Stephen Sondheim. It’s a film about the sometimes stifling urge to create, the struggle to find yourself and your art, and the need to remain open to the world - and pay the rent at the same time.
