MENA 2021: Jasmine Road

Middle East and North Africa Film Festival

A Syrian refugee family arrives in the rural Canadian western town of Red River and settle on the ranch of a recently widowed conservative cowboy in his sixties. Withstanding some initial opposition in the town, Layla and her family struggle to find footing in a new land. Mac, the aging cowboy, finds himself in similar circumstances as his new house-members: seeking a renewed faith in life. While awaiting news of her missing husband, Layla (a journalist and ice cream maker from Aleppo) introduces Mac to her Arabic culture. She proposes to open an Arabic ice cream (booza) shop to help them both. Layla’s booza ice cream may just hold the powerful elixir that will create a new future for her and her family on Jasmine Road.

The film can also be watched online.
