Creator Talks

Whether it’s True Detective, Catch-22, or Alias Grace; Letterkenny, Parks and Recreation, or Girls; American Woman, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, or Black Bear (screening at VIFF 20), our guests Aubrey Plaza, Sarah Gadon, and Christopher Abbott are forging remarkable careers in the worlds of TV and film. The group will talk about the director/actor collaboration and the challenge of doing meaningful work; they’ll also share their inspirations and techniques, as well as advice they have for upcoming actors.

Session Participants

Sabrina Furminger is a Vancouver-based columnist and the host of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast – a twice-weekly interview show that celebrates the actors, filmmakers, and other artists who populate the local film and TV industry. She has written weekly film and TV industry columns for the Westender and the Vancouver Courier newspapers, and currently writes similar content for MONTECRISTO Magazine. Sabrina won a Women in Film & Television Vancouver Spotlight Award in 2016, and Ma Murray Journalism Awards in 2017 and 2018. In 2020, she received funding to create a three-part documentary series about dismantling white supremacy in the Vancouver film and television industry.

Aubrey is best known for portraying April Ludgate on the award-winning comedy series Parks And Recreation. This year, she stars in Lawrence Michael Levine’s Black Bear opposite Christopher Abbott and Sarah Gadon. The film, which Aubrey also co-produced, had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and garnered her rave reviews for her performance. Originally from Wilmington, Delaware, Aubrey is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Sarah is an award-winning actress known for her work in the highly acclaimed Netflix series Alias Grace, as well as in Season 3 of HBO’s True Detective. She has received critical acclaim for her roles in films such as David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars, Cosmopolis, and A Dangerous Method; Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy; Xavier Dolan’s The Death And Life Of John F. Donovan; Semi Challas’ American Woman; and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Black Bear (VIFF 20).

An acclaimed stage, screen, and television actor, Christopher recently starred opposite George Clooney and Kyle Chandler in Hulu’s Catch-22, adapted from Joseph Heller’s acclaimed novel. He stars in Lawrence Michael Levine’s Black Bear (VIFF 20) opposite Aubrey Plaza and Sarah Gadon. On stage, Christopher made his Broadway debut in John Guare’s The House Of Blue Leaves; he also performed in Tennessee Williams’ The Rose Tattoo and Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love.
