VIFF AMP closes our programming with a conversation about music and culture with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra President and CEO Angela Elster and Grammy and Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman. Karpman’s music is on the cutting edge of various musical genres (film and television scoring, symphonic music, opera, jazz, and pop) and she has been one of the leaders in the fight for greater diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry.

Five-time Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman’s music spans film, television, theatre, interactive media, and live performance. Across concert halls, Karpman is well-known for Ask Your Mama, a Grammy-winning multimedia opera based on the iconic cycle of poems by Langston Hughes. She founded the Alliance for Women Film Composers in 2014 and was elected to be the first female governor of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences’ music branch in 2016.

Angela Elster, one of Canada’s preeminent arts and culture leaders, is President and CEO of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the VSO School of Music. She brings to the sector demonstrated expertise and extraordinary vision in strategic planning, impact measurement, academic research, government relations, and fundraising, and is known as an agent of change. Creativity, intention, values, and vision are key drivers in all aspects of her life. Angela has been awarded one of Canada’s highest honors—the Meritorious Service Medal by the Governor General of Canada, recognizing outstanding accomplishments that set an example and bring benefit to our country.
