Support Our VIFF Community

Today tickets go on sale for VIFF 39, our first online edition--safely and securely geared for home consumption, and delivered from our VIFF Connect platform to your screens. Behind the scenes, we’re working to ensure that this festival enables equity and access for filmmakers, curators, and audiences from marginalized and underrepresented communities. Our online festival will be the most accessible in our history--the first to span the length and breadth of the province.

This year at VIFF, the focus has been on rethinking our role in the community. We've been looking at what we do best and thinking about how we can do it better; our goal is to embed our values in concrete action. It is in this spirit of innovation and connection that we unveil the reimagined VIFF Centre, home to our beloved Vancity Theatre and now supplemented with a dazzling new lobby, a 41-seat Studio Theatre flex space, a New Media Lab, and an Education Suite.

The new VIFF Centre is a manifestation of our 2020 vision. We’ll still bring you the best in Canadian and international cinema: art films, documentaries, and curated events in partnership with organizations who share our belief in film as a tool to explore challenging subjects collectively. But we are now a truly multifaceted facility:

  • The Studio Theatre allows us to extend our programming range, service local filmmakers at low-to-no cost, and present talks and lectures to community groups and non-profits.
  • Cutting-edge VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) will be showcased in our New Media Lab.
  • The Education Suite will be a forum for workshops, creative development sessions, production meetings, school classes, interviews, and auditions.
  • Our new design, and our professionally staffed concession, will cater to patrons who’d like to savour a glass of BC wine, a local craft beer, or a soft drink along with their movie snacks.
  • Our VIFF Connect streaming platform will remain open, bringing VIFF programming and educational opportunities to your living room, as well as to virtual classrooms across BC.

This is our vision for the future. We believe the VIFF Centre will prove a fluid and flexible lynchpin for the film community in our city and beyond.

If you share our vision and our values please consider taking a subscription or making a gift to support the next step in this journey, because culture is always a work in progress.

The Lochmaddy Foundation will match any donations received before closing night dollar for dollar, up to $15,000, and all gifts of $25 and above are fully tax-deductible.

Without a doubt, the VIFF Centre is one of the best venues to screen a film as a filmmaker and a film buff. Great films, passionate film audiences, and now with an exciting new Education Suite and interactive New Media Lab. I’m so looking forward to the day when I can attend a screening at the VIFF Centre again and afterwards, hop over to the noodle shop a block away and spend the next hour discussing one of their evocative films!

KDocsFF couldn’t be prouder to partner with the new VIFF Centre! The new Studio Space, Media Lab, and Education Suite add to the values of community, collaboration, and storytelling already at the heart of the VIFF world. As our essential social justice festival partner, the VIFF Centre is the difference-maker: an innovative space for engagement and change.

The renovations at the VIFF Centre will provide an exciting new space for film lovers and filmmakers! I’m particularly thrilled about the education suite which will give future filmmakers including those participating in the VIFF Mentorship Catalyst program, the opportunity to gather, see films and discuss collectively while building their own community and forming relationships with other film professionals. Having a dedicated space for emerging creators to share ideas and learn together will undoubtedly lead to creative collaborations, new inspirations and exciting projects in the future. Whether it's having a safe spot to debrief after a challenging screening, or a space for formal workshops, I see the education suite as being a community hub for program participants to grow their careers during and beyond the festival.

Super cool to hear about the redeveloped VIFF Centre! It's an exciting addition to an already wonderful venue, and we've been proud to play our documentaries there. I'm most excited for the micro cinema and to experience the new media lab as we're currently working on an interactive project.
