Cindy Sherman -
Women on Film
In collaboration with the Vancouver Art Gallery, which is currently hosting the first major retrospective of Cindy Sherman’s work in Canada in twenty years, we asked the internationally acclaimed artist to suggest a series of her favourite films. Sherman's art has always had a performative aspect. She is usually present in all of her photographs, albeit transformed into characters, often reminiscent of movie types and suggestive of wider dramatic scenarios. Over more than four decades, Sherman systematically returns to questions of identity and the construction of female personae through clothes, make-up, jewelry, wigs, and prosthetics. She draws on the iconography of old and new Hollywood, as well as fashion advertising, historical painting, and contemporary portraiture to suggest the myriad ways women project themselves into the world. This short film series is meant to complement and extend that investigation.
