When Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy published the semi-autobiographical novels Sarah and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things in 1999, the literary world was quick to take notice of a writer deeply versed in abuse, addiction, and survival. It was six years before this reclusive literary sensation would be outed as either a hoax or an alias (depending on one’s sympathies), a period in which "JT" has been impersonated by author Laura Albert’s boyfriend’s sister, Savannah, in numerous interviews, meetings, signings, etc.
Did this subterfuge detract from the supposed authenticity of what were, after all, works of fiction? Would an older female writer have captured the media’s attention like the bisexual skater kid? But Justin Kelly’s knotty, inquisitive film is more interested in the strange psychological dynamics at play in all this role playing, with one young woman (the brilliant Kristen Stewart) playing a young man and becoming a star of sorts; an older woman - the real author - playing JT’s English press agent (Laura Dern folks), and both flirting heavily with hot European actress Eva (in real life, Asia Argento), who turns The Heart is Deceitful into a movie without realizing JT’s a phony.
"Stewart is captivating in a challenging role that requires her to juggle several identities at once." Eric Kohn, Indiewire
"A rich and rewarding watch." Tomris Laffley, Rogerebert.com
