The Ballad of Shirley Collins + live music by Petunia
MAD | Music Mondays
Join us for a celebration of folk with a live solo performance by Vancouver’s resident hillbilly alchemist Petunia at 6.30pm, followed at 7.15 by the Vancouver premiere of "the music documentary of the year" (Louder than War).
The Ballad of Shirley Collins is a moving portrait of the epochal British folk singer, now in her 80s and recording her first album in four decades. (In the late 70s Collins lost her voice - and her self-confidence - after a traumatic breakup.) Shirley’s other claim to fame is her role as assistant on Alan Lomax’s legendary 1959 field recordings of American folk music, from which we hear liberal cuts here. More than just a music doc, this ballad is a rueful elegy for passing time and lost loves, and a celebration of the songs that endure.
"She is a brilliant documentary subject - plain-speaking, authentic, feisty and seemingly without ego." Cath Clarke, The Guardian
"Exuding a keen sympathy for local tradition and place, it is something to be cherished." Lewis Gordon, Little White Lies
"A wonderful, warm film." Tara Brady, Irish Times
