How Do I Become a Volunteer?

Fill out the Year-Round Volunteer Application. You will receive an email acknowledging your application once it has been received. Alumni Volunteers will also re-register through this application process.
3. Phone/Video Interview
You will receive an email from a member of the Volunteer Department to schedule your phone/video interview. Once you have completed a successful phone interview, you will be offered a position and scheduled for an orientation on a team that suits your skills, availability and needs.
After you have been accepted onto a team, you will receive a welcome email with a link to the Volunteer Handbook. This handbook has all the information you could ever what to know about the VIFF Year-Round Volunteer Programme! Please read this before your orientation.
You will be scheduled for your team orientation and training at the end of the interview process. Orientations are mandatory for all volunteers – it is at these that you receive your Volunteer packages, meet the team, department staff as well as a member of the Volunteer Department, receive team-specific information and training, and review policies and procedures.
Once you’ve gone through the orientation, you will be added to the team and given access to the schedule. Most positions are a commitment of one shift per week. Shifts are between 3-5 hours.

Once you have completed your two-month training period, instead of vouchers, you will receive a pass for yourself and a guest for all regular screenings.

Current Year-Round Volunteer Openings
Front of House Team
Commitment: minimum 3-5 hours a week
Schedule: Day/Night, Weekends/Weekdays
Age requirement: 16+
Description & Responsibilities:
This team helps make every screening run smoothly and create a great experience for our patrons. This is a customer service position at the Vancity Theatre where volunteers have a variety of tasks they can choose from. Before and after screenings volunteers are busy helping patrons and preparing the theatre for the next show. During the screening, there is ample downtime. Volunteers are encouraged to discuss films with other volunteers, use the Media Lab or Education Suite and are more than welcome to bring their own book or homework to pass the time.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Door: Scanning tickets and helping direct patrons.
- Ushering: Help patrons navigate through the theatre and organize line-ups. (Note: Ushers for unrated films must be 19 years or older)
- Clean-Up: Help keep our theatre clean in-between and after shows.
- Special events: Set up and tear down alongside helping with cleaning and putting away dishes.
The role is good for someone who:
- Has great customer service skills
- Has a positive and outgoing attitude
- Works well in high-paced environments
- Enjoys teamwork and is self-motivated
