James L Brooks’ 1987 comedy is a fascinating, witty glimpse of TV news 35 years ago through the hectic lives of three journalists at a Washington DC network: diligent, intelligent reporter Aaron (Albert Brooks) is best friends with his producer, Jane (Holly Hunter), who is serious, exceptionally driven and who is herself perplexed to realize she has a crush on a new anchor, Tom (William Hurt), who is ambitious, handsome, and dim. Aaron is appalled…
Brooks (creator of The Simpsons) uses this romantic triangle to comment on what he correctly diagnosed as declining news standards at the networks in the Reagan era. Pin-sharp dialogue gives this great film its punch.
