Vancouver is known to be a foodie’s dream, with its vibrant international culinary scene; but if you ask the average Canadian what their favourite Vancouver African or Caribbean restaurant is, they probably wouldn’t have an answer. Though often omitted of the culinary conversation, the African diasporic culinary scene is vibrant and growing rapidly.
Union Street director Jamila Pomeroy ventures into home kitchens, restaurants and community spaces, bringing audiences on a cross-cultural, multigenerational journey into Vancouver’s African diasporic culinary scene. Through cooking segments, commentary, and interviews, the film, guided by Pomeroy, explores cultural preservation, sovereignty, and food security, showcasing powerful stories of immigration, resilience, and joy.
