Nelly & Nadine film image

Nadine falls in love with Nelly as she sings the aria Un del di, vedremo (One Fine Day, We’ll See) from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. Snow is falling. It is Christmas Eve. And they are both prisoners in a German Concentration Camp, 1944.

This exceptional film (it happens to be a documentary) casts a new light on the Holocaust as it gently unravels the intertwined histories of these two women: Nadine, daughter of a Chinese diplomat; and Nelly, an opera singer who worked with the French Resistance. Director Magnus Gertten unearths a remarkable trove of home movie footage (stunningly digitized), family letters, diaries and photographs – and gently probes the taboos that kept this extraordinary love story a secret for so long.

It’s tremendously moving, eliciting audience sobs towards the end… To say more would spoil the breadth of this rich tale, which I feel should be required viewing for anyone with a pulse.

Glenn Gaylord, The Queer Review

It’s fair to say that Gertten has hit the jackpot… This film is a gift that keeps on giving.

Amber Wilkinson, Eye for Film

Poignant and deeply moving… Magnus Gertten’s film of forbidden love, Nelly & Nadine, is a deeply-layered and skilfully crafted detective story that sweeps a viewer with waves of emotion.
