In this first feature written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) gives an impressive performance as Ziggy, a teenage troubadour courting internet fame and craving recognition from a politically conscious classmate, even as he despises his altruistic mom (Julianne Moore), Evelyn, who says and probably believes all the right things but manages to alienate almost everyone she comes into contact with IRL, Ziggy most of all. For her part, Evelyn rechannels her energies into mentoring a handsome young man at the shelter where she works, without stopping to ask if he wants her help.
Braids the biodigital sweetness of Miranda July around the poison wit of Noah Baumbach.
