Pasvik Folk High School in Norway provides a very special gap year education. Located in the far north, near the Russian border, it teaches arctic survival skills (bushcraft and hunting) and dog sledding (mushing). Jesus Camp directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady follow three teens across their ten-month enrollment. Nineteen-year-old Hege is getting over the death of her dad. Bjorn is “likeable but annoying,” in his own estimation, and finds it hard to keep friends. Romain, an 18-year-old from the Netherlands, is painfully insecure. But it’s astonishing what bonding with huskies can do…
Folktales is an instant all-time favorite doc. Another doggie doc masterpiece. Another film that I think can and will change lives.

It’s beautiful to watch humanity’s best friends alleviate modern coming-of-age anxieties in troubled teens. The chilly Arctic climes make for an especially illuminating backdrop.

With formal polish and deep compassion, it proves to be the most heartwarming film of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
