There’s a world going on underground! Although it’s officially derived from Aesop’s fable The Ant and the Grasshoper, Pixar’s second feature shrinks Seven Samurai to ant-like proportions, with heroic Flick (Kids in the Hall alum Dave Foley) enlisting the services of a touring bug circus to defend the colony against the marauding grasshoppers led by the malignant Hopper (voiced by Kevin Spacey). Unlike Dreamworks’ rival Antz (released the same year), A Bug’s Life is bright and colourful, with a fun roster of comic supporting characters. That it is also an anti-capitalist celebration of the power of collective action is a significant bonus.
