Heart of Gold film image; woman crouching by a burning miniature house

Texas, 1969. Michael infuriates girlfriend Mary-Bob by accepting the draft to serve in Vietnam. But after a violent incident at boot camp, he deserts and escapes over the border to British Columbia. Here he finds shelter with a group of Russian pacifists, the Doukhobors. Meanwhile back in the US, Mary-Bob becomes a militant anti-war activist…

An original screenplay by director Patricia Gruben (who recently led our Film Studies series on literary adaptation), Heart of Gold makes a fascinating companion piece to Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada. Both films reflect on the late 60s when so many Americans sought refuge from the Vietnam war by coming north of the border. Making the most of its austere budget, the film examines an entire epoch by dramatizing the ethical quandaries of two young people faced with choices that will define their lives.

A critical and box office sensation in Italy, Paola Cortellesi's triumphant directorial debut is the tale of a Roman housewife in 1946, who stands up against the routine sexist abuse she suffers. Funny, heartbreaking and inspiring.

96 min

Deemed by many critics one of the essential films of 2024, a multiple festival award winner and Academy Award winner for Best Documentary, No Other Land is a reminder that mass expulsion is by no means a new reality for Palestinians.

Misericordia

Dir. Alain Guiraudie
103 min

Edgy, eccentric, and unapologetically queer, this film goes from drama to comedy without putting a foot wrong. Sex and murder are the subjects, and writer-director Alain Guiraudie (Stranger by the Lake) mines them for suspense and outrageous laughs.
