The Musicians

Book Now Book Now

Astrid Thompson (Valérie Donzelli) finally succeeds in fulfilling her father’s dream: to bring together a string quartet featuring four Stradivarius-playing virtuosi for a performance of a new composition he commissioned. But Lise, George, Peter, and Apolline, the four musicians recruited for the occasion, are incapable of playing together. The rehearsals are one ego crisis after another. With no solution in sight, Astrid decides to go and find the only person who can still save the event: Charlie Beaumont (Frédéric Pierro), the composer of the score.

With authentic musicans playing the members of the quartet, the film is as much a treat for the ears as it is for the eye. (The original score is by Grégoire Hetzel.)

Delightful… The film is bound together by its unabashed celebration of music, and not only classical music. (There’s a wonderful moment when the group suddenly breaks into a bluegrass song.) It’s a celebration that transcends personal animosities.

Peter Rainer, Christian Science Monitor

Engaging… a comedy that is not afraid to be intelligent. It’s a welcome cinematic entry for discerning moviegoers.

Sarah A Spitz, Stage and Cinema

Highly enjoyable, and without a single false note.

Innocence

Dir. Lucile Hadžihalilović
115 min

Lucile Hadžihalilović's first feature is a suggestive, subversive fairy tale set in a private school for young girls, the kind of film David Lynch might have made, if he'd been born a French woman in the early 1960s.

Where to Land

Dir. Hal Hartley
75 min

Hal Hartley's first new film in a decade is a melancholy farce about mortality and what we'll call "late middle-age". Bill Sage is a semi-retired filmmaker who isn't dying faster than the rest of us but who behaves like he might be.
