Embark on a musical voyage unlike any other with Stephen Hamm: Theremin Man, a legendary figure in the Vancouver Music and Arts scene for over three decades (previous projects include Slow, Canned Hamm and Nardwuar and the Evaporators).
The theremin is a fascinating fusion of science and music – an instrument played by interacting with electromagnetic fields through antennae. Delve into the world of the theremin, an early electronic musical instrument with classical roots that is also the source of those eerie sounds in 1940s and 50s thrillers and sci-fi films like Spellbound and The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Stephen Hamm, a master of the theremin, shares his personal odyssey with the instrument, intertwining its history with his own revelations and experiences. Discover how playing the theremin has not only enriched his creative process but also provided insights into self-identity, physical connection, and unconventional modes of thinking.
Engage in a talk on its origins, witness demonstrations of its unique workings and a jam session filled with mind-bending sounds. Cap off the show with a live improvisation performance by Stephen Hamm set to the silent movie gem The Eclipse, The Courtship of the Sun and the Moon by George Méliès.
